We installed this unit about 4 years ago and first it all worked great. Then after a while, it started to make gurgling and knocking sounds, seemingly during the heat cycle. I reached out to Kohler support but they just 'shrugged' their shoulders. There is absolutely no documentation for troubleshooting anywhere. Then, a few months ago, the unit started leaking water through the steam head. Again I reached out to support and they offered me a 20% discount on $600 worth of replacement parts. The unit is built into a closet and it would take a plumber hours and hours to disconnect all the plumbing. There is no documentation on how to actually replace those parts either. (Solenoid and Float) There is a good chance my plumber wouldn’t even open the generator and if the did, probably not know how to replace those parts. I see a lot of the same issues posted on all the forums. Why then would Kohler continue distributing this generator knowing that the engineering is faulty and unreliable? It’s such a bummer for a brand like Kohler. There’s no way I will replace it with the same unit, instead, I will look for a better brand and design.

Great concept, terrible engineering.

The unit worked great …. For 18 months.  Then Error 5 started showing up occasionally.  Now that’s all it shows.  Error 5 is a sensor indicating there’s not enough water in the tank.  I’ve checked several times.  The water tank is full.  The sensor design or the sensor placement is a design flaw. The only fix is to buy a new unit.   I won’t buy another Kohler.  It’s very unfortunate such a small part tanks a product priced at about 2 times higher than their competition.

After less than 2 years of use the generator started leaking from the steam outlet. This seems to be a ongoing issue of these 9Kw generators. The failure was the rubber stop on the float valve, a very small 1/4" diameter rubber gasket. Another person posted they had the exact same issue.  Our model is K-1733-na. We were told Kohler would not offer any warranty and told us there were no replacement parts.  It has sat unused since.  Since this is the same issue as other people have reported there is a definite design flaw with these generators.  They look like they are built by Thermasol as the heating element is stamped with this brand.  Another brand to avoid obviously.

Unreliable Design.  Only lasted two years

I went with Kohler because of their reputation, but I am disappointed... this is almost a 3K purchase, it should last more than 2 years...

Leaking after 2 years of service.

Bought this 3 years ago. I use it daily when taking a shower. I LOVE IT! It is so quick and it pumps out the steam! Also the one time I needed to use their customer service they were fantastic! Highley recommend.

After less than 4 years the generator started leaking from the steam outlet. The failure was the rubber stop on the float valve, a very small 1/4" diameter rubber gasket. Kohler does not offer this gasket as a replacement, only a $195 float valve assembly. I replaced the gasket on my unit with a hand cut 1/4" thick x 1/4" round section from a faucet washer, however this failed after 2 months, probably because the compound is not designed for the heated environment. So I have replaced the float assembly. This is a $195 part requiring 1.5 hours labor.
